Josg, having lived in Nelson for a bunch of years now and having a AWD vehicle I would not want to trust a FWD to get up to Whitewater and to Kootenay Pass for some touring - however having said that it is all about current conditions and right now the roads a clear of snow and should be for a few days but if a dump comes in you want to know you can get to the hill or pass. If it gets real bad there is a local shuttle company [gravity adventures - first chair shuttle] or the good ole' hitching post for thumbing a ride.

Either way, it is what ever you can accommodate with your finances. Just be sure to visit some of the great tours listed on the site and report back to us with your adventures!

I've been getting around the Rossland Range including wandering over to Rogers Pass, Whistler, Kootenay Pass, Fernie etc in a 1990 mazda 626 FWD with winter tyres and studs. Not great, but pick your day, drive carefully and you'll be right. Had a mate end up in a creek in an AWD, its so much about how you drive rather than what you drive. Obviously an AWD will handle the conditions better, but it depends very much on you!!
