there is actually a huge alpine area back there that's not part of the resort. Most of it is pretty flat and wind-blown but there are some really nice faces as it drops off to the east. The best, and most popular, part of the slackcountry is on the trail guides and it's called The Gils. The runs are only 100 - 200+ metres of vertical but the hiking is easy and it doesn't take that long to get in or out. It sees a fair bit of traffic but it's such a big area it only takes a tiny bit of creativity to find a fresh line and if you're willing to get way out there's wide open untracked faces.

it can be pretty easy to end up in flat deep snow in the middle of the forest though if you don't know where you are going. the closer to the mountain you are, the easier it is to find the track out, and past a certain point snowshoes, skins, or a superhuman effort are mandatory. If you do get lost out there, head west (skiiers right) for long enough and you'll pop out on a run somewhere ...

sounds like it could be confusing if you don't know where you are going? Are there any maps/route descriptions in existence - would you like to help us create them for the site? We would be interested in putting the specifics into the routes section so people can get informed and stay safe out there. Let us know: info@backcountryskiingcanada.com
