Red Mountain Resort is gauging public interest in the possibility of community ownership, this means there’s a good chance you can own a piece of this historic ski resort. Why are they doing this? It sounds like they need some capital for on-hill improvements and what better way to do this then let the public buy in. It worked for Shames Ski hill in Terrace BC a few years back with their “My Mountain Co-op” initiative where the public rescued their beloved ski hill from disappearing.

In the words of Howard Katkov, Red Mountain CEO:“You are helping to preserve something that once lost, will be gone forever. We can’t over overstate this. The writing is on the wall.”

Proposed Investor Benefits:Part ownership of the entire resort and assetsLimited edition custom skisLift ticketsAccess to overnight cabins atop Grey MountainSupports an annual fund for local educationMore to be announced…
It sounds like Red Mountain Resort needs your help. Will you invest and find out what’s in it for you? (stay tuned for more details on how you can help).

Winter up top and Spring down below at Red Resort

As the 2015/16 ski season comes to a close, I was fortunate enough to squeeze in one last blue bird day at one of North America’s top rated ski resorts - Red Mountain in Rossland BC. As of late this unpretentious ski resort has been making some big waves in the ski world, so I decided to see what all the fuss was about. Maybe 7 lifts accessing 2877 acres and 890m of vertical had something to do with it.

Upon arriving I was greeted with a casual/friendly vibe and total lack of crowds. I found this refreshing compared to most other world-class ski destinations that can be cookie cutter in nature. Knowing that spring skiing conditions were in full swing I wasn’t really on a powder quest but just happy to be enjoying the scenery, sunshine and of course Red’s famous Slush Cup!
After sampling a handful of runs one of Red’s three mountains it became clear that while this mountain has pretty much everything one could ever want, it’s speciality is advanced treed runs. I skied mainly North and West aspects to try and find as much soft snow as possible and found killer lines sprinkled with cliffs, gullies and even old mine shafts. While is was definitely spring skiing in the valley it was still winter up top with soft groomers and fine turns to be had. Mid-morning I made my way over to Paradise lodge, a beautiful wood cabin on Granite Mountain where I refuelled and socialize on the deck with locals and old ski buds.
Over the course of the day I tried to sample a little of everything that Red Resort had to offer, but this proved to be easier said than done. The inclusion of Grey Mountain within Red’s boundaries adds almost another 1000 acres to the resort’s already impressive size. Add to this Mt. Kirkup cat-accessible skiing (for only $10/ride) and you get an additional 200 acres of skiing and riding. With stats like these I knew that I was going to have to come back again to get the full Red Resort experience.

As my ski day was coming to a close I headed back over to the base area where I was able to catch the new double “Slush Cup” event and enjoy a ‘cold one’ at Rafters Lounge. From the patio, fans were treated to a costumed spectacle consisting of a pool of ice cold water, then a jump and another pool of water. Double the challenge of your typical Slush Cup event and of course double the laughs and carnage. While some contestants were not so lucky at crossing both ponds, all were met with audience approval. While relaxing on the patio enjoying the last rays of sunshine, I couldn’t help thinking that this must be how part of the resort got the name “paradise”.

Red Resort soon to be 8th Largest Ski Area in Canada!

It's official after months of speculation and rumour, Red Resort is installing their new fixed-grip Poma quad chair starting this week. The construction is due to be complete prior to the 2013/14 season kicking off in the late fall. This is the largest ski resort expansion in the Kootenay's since Whitewater installed their Glory Ridge chair a few years back.

Here's the facts:
- 2,831 vertical from the top of Grey Mountain (total vert is 2,919)
- 360 degrees of skiing
- 997 acres of additional skiing
- total acres of skiing now 2,787 (similar to Breckenridge or Jackson Hole)
- 8th largest ski resort in Canada
- 18th largest ski resort in the USA out of over 500 resorts

The details straight form Red Resort:
RED Now in Top 20 of All North American Resorts by Terrain ScaleRED Mountain Resort & Regional Economy Get Lift.
ROSSLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA: RED Mountain Resort is beyond proud to announce that its recent expansion to contiguous Grey Mountain now comes with a chair lift. The fixed-grip Poma quad chair is set for installation starting with a ground breaking ceremony today, Thursday, June 20th at 5:00 PM. The new lift is on schedule to be completed for this coming ski season.
In addition to the ski area’s Red and Granite peaks, skiers can now access one more stellar peak, Grey Mountain by chair lift -- with 360-degree skiing off the top! This development of Grey Mountain marks one of the single largest expansions of an existing resort in North America in four decades. It places RED Mountain Resort firmly in the scale of resorts such as Breckenridge, Colorado or Jackson Hole, Wyoming in terms of skiable acreage. Grey Mountain adds 997 acres to RED bringing the total skiable acres to 2,787. This puts the "local legend" hill in the Top 20 of all North American resorts in terms of terrain scale.
Hardcore snow sliders will love the challenging new chutes and steeps off the north and eastern slopes of Grey. "We feel the new lift will enhance the experience for all our customers," says Katkov. "Lift-lines have never been a deterrent around here…and the new lift on Grey will spread guests out even more. Local powder fiends have nothing to worry about and new visitors have a lot to look forward to."
The Grey Mountain expansion makes RED the 8th largest ski area in Canada and, for comparison, the 18th largest in the USA out of approximately 500 resorts. Located just 5mi/8km north of the USA/CAN border, RED has long been a key component of both B.C. and Washington skiers' diets, not to mention a hot spot among the world's "powder vanguard."
With 2,919ft/884m of vertical on offer from the top of Granite and 2831ft/863m of vert off the new peak on Grey, it's no wonder The New York Times voted Rossland/RED Mountain their "Number 8 Place to Visit in 2013," citing the expansion as a true game changer: "Suddenly RED’s trail map will stretch as wide as Jackson Hole’s inbounds terrain. With a new lodge and the first on-hill accommodations added in the last few years, this local legend is ready to step out into the spotlight," writes the New York Times' Christopher Solomon.

Red Resort and Salomon presented The Gathering 5.0

Red Resort was again the place to be this long weekend for the 5th installment of Salomon's Gathering. With temps creeping up above the 15 degree mark it sure felt like a spring beach party on the mountain with corn snow being the dish of the day. On both Saturday and Sunday there were plenty of free backcountry events taking place all over the mountain and a good selection of next years Salomon goodies to take for a test drive.

At the base of the mountain the Salomon tent was stock piled with plenty of skis to demo and even a few that you can't get your hands on until next season like the Salomon Q98 and our favorite the Salomon Q105. We were lucky enough to get a pair of each of these for testing this year so we will have a fall review live in our review section for you fall 2013, so be sure not to miss that.

We took in the weenie roast at the top on Grey Mountain and even though there has been a free cat ride to the top all season (prior to the new chair going in next season) we decided to do things the old fashioned way and skinned to the top. After all, it's only a 15 minute climb and you barely break a sweat. On the summit there was plenty of fun and a fire pit to roast hot dogs if you needed some fuel after your climb (or cat ride).

For the details on this route check it out in our route section or have a look at all the details on our Suunto Moves Count page here.

After a day on the hill we headed on over to Rossland's Flying Steam Shovel restaurant to hear 'Rad' Brad Vancour's Warren Miller escapades from years gone by and to close out the night we took in the All-Star Film & Photo Night part II. With Nelson's own Mitchell Scott at the helm we were entertained by the likes of Jeff Schmuck (his real name), Steve Ogle (another Nelson talent) and my favorite of the night Dane Tudor. Dane took us through his career from child shredder at Red Resort to where he is now and hit not only the highlights of his career but also some of his more prolific spills and injuries – truly inspiring.

The Gathering always proves to be a good time so give it a go next year if you happen to be in the neighbourhood and even if you're not it's a great excuse to make the trip to Rossland–like you need one?

Going Grey - Red Resort's new slack country

Red Resort in Rossland, BC, opened this weekend to bluebird skies and excellent coverage, at least on the top 2/3 of the mountain. It was one of the best opening days I can recall, with boot-top powder, sunshine and no lift lines.

The view from Grey a couple years back. The newly cut runs on Grey mean wide open lines right to Easy Street and back to the lift. Good times.
On Sunday I did my first slack tours up Grey Mountain to check out the new runs cut for the future lift expansion (slated for 2013-14, if it pans out). The new terrain is a blast – wide open with some great features. And judging by the parade of people walking up there, it’s going to be very popular as a slack destination this year.
I’m not sure when the snow cat will start transporting people to the top of Grey for $10 a pop, but even then it’s going to be a fine 20-minute hike to get some easy powder turns.
Conditions-wise in the Rossland Range the weak layer that was releasing 50-70 cm down seems to have stabilized a bit and the 15cm of snow Friday over the nasty rain crust made a big difference. South aspects are still a bit of a poo sandwhich with several persistent faceted/ice crust layers. I did observe natural releases 50-70cm down on the northeast face of Mt. Roberts and skiers triggered slides on the same layer in Papoose Bowl and Beer Belly earlier in the week before the resort opened.
Some north aspects, at least in the northern part of the Rossland Range, seem to be more stable with a fairly consolidated snowpack down to the late October/early November faceted layers buried a meter plus. While this is encouraging, if it does release it could be big. I’m leery of any unsupported north-facing aspects. It should be noted that all north aspects are wind affected in the alpine to sub-alpine, getting better as you get lower, then getting worse as you get to the thinly buried rain crust. It’ll be interesting to see what happens with loading from the coming storm cycles. Bring it on!

Red goes pimp - new shuttle service

Red Resort has a new shuttle service, Ross Vegas style. It's actually a pimped out bus, not a Hummer..this from the Nelson Daily News:

Two new shuttle services to Red Mountain Resort have been negotiated for this ski season, one all the way to and from Spokane, and one a short five minute ride between Rossland and Red.Deanne Steven of Tourism Rossland (TR) announced the new services to Rossland’s council at Monday evening's regular meeting. She was particularly excited by the new in-town shuttle that will use the “pimped out” 24-seat Hummer offered by Lasting Impressions Limousines.
The new in-town shuttleSteven said it all began when she sat down to brainstorm, after years in which it has been recognized as a potentially good idea that hasn't taken hold: “What is the problem with having an in-town shuttle?""We noticed very quickly that we have a couple of great opportunities,” she said.First, Steven pointed out that the BC Transit "ski bus" to Red Mountain goes 54 per cent of the days that Red is open. "That's a lot higher than a lot of us thought," she said, since the ski bus is limited to weekends and school holidays—but those add up to more than half of the days across the ski season."We see an opportunity there to promote that , and let them know it's going on," she said. Steven also saw an opportunity to piggy-back on the BC Transit service in a new partnership with the Red Mountain Academies (RMA) to offer a shuttle on most of the days that BC Transit does not offer service, boosting the overall number of ski season days for which a shuttle is available to 89 per cent.RMA and TR have hired Lasting Impressions Limos to offer the service on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday each week. The limo will cost users the same as the bus ($2 one way), will follow the same route, and will leave at the same times. In addition, after the "bus" route, the limo will wrap back and do the route a second time to pick up the RMA students."We've mirrored exactly the times of the BC Transit bus," Steven said, "because we're trying to make it as easy as possible for people to get in the habit of taking it."One difference, however, will be a lunchtime run on Wednesdays and Thursdays instead of an evening run. Another difference is that the limo will not head down to the valley. "It would be great," Steven said, "but we don't have the money. We've decided to take baby steps."TR is putting together a pamphlet with the schedule and locations for both the BC Transit and the limo shuttle services, and TR is also making signs for each of the three ski bus stops: the Prestige, Casa Alpina, and Red Mountain. The BC Transit ski bus leaves the Prestige at 8:23, Casa Alpina at 8:26, and arrives at Red Mountain at 8:31. It returns from Red at 3:45, arriving at Casa Alpina at 3:50 and the Prestige at 3:53.Steven explained that RMA need to hire a bus in any case, and it doesn't cost twice as much to do the route twice. "We've managed to keep [RMA] under budget," she said, keeping their bill to about $4000 for the season, "and it's going to cost [TR] about $8000.""It's a pimped out, Las Vegas style, leather interior limo with a big screen TV and a big thumping stereo," she laughed. "The kids are going to love it. Everyone's going to love it.""We're hoping that instead of hitch-hiking, more people will take the bus," Steven said. "Hopefully we're successful, but we could be too successful. It's a 24-seat bus and it's doing one route. The best problem would be too many people."The "guaranteed" 4 days per week Spokane shuttle to Red Mountain and WhitewaterThe Spokane airport shuttle has been offered in the past by Queen City Shuttles, but only when a minimum of four passengers were on board, Steven said, announcing that TR, Red Mountain, Whitewater, and the Nelson Kootenay Lake DMO (Destination Marketing Organization, as TR is for Rossland) have partnered to guarantee 4 days of service each week regardless of how many passengers need the lift."What we've done, basically, is buy the empty seats," Steven said. "Even if it's one person booked on the bus, it will still go."The Spokane shuttle will run Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday when both ski hills are open, making the loop from Nelson to Rossland to Spokane and back the same way.At $135 per passenger, Steven says this is unlikely to be the transportation chosen by groups of four people, but the shuttle would make sense for one or two people on a ski trip."It's not a perfect solution yet," Steven allowed, "but we're trying to build capacity on these lines so these businesses can make enough money that they're working on their own."
About Tourism Rossland funding
TR's funding comes from a variety of sources. From April 1 2011 to Mar. 31 2012, for example, TR had a total income of more than $162,000.
Almost $50,000 came from the Additional Hotel Room Tax, more than $30,000 in grants, $30,000 from the City of Rossland, $27,000 from the Red Mountain Resort Association, almost $20,000 from the Pay to Play program, $1700 from voluntary contributions by small accommodators, and $590 in membership fees.
[Correction: This article has been amended to reflect that fact that, although we all dearly wish it were true, the new shuttle is not actually a Hummer but rather, as Deanne Steven claried in a recent email, "just a 24 seater shuttle bus- but yes it is totally pimped out!"]

First tracks of the season on Red claimed this morning. 16 inches measured at the top of the t-bar. Did two laps of the t-bar run at 7:00am, and back to work for 8:30. I heart Rossland.

Not bad either. Bushy and mushy, but hey it's Oct 22nd. Through the terrain park it was actualy not that bushy. Fun to leave two long trenches down the mountain and be getting in my car just as Red employees were arriving in the parking lot.

Major in-bounds terrain expansion at RED RESORT

This just in...Red Resort announces 1,000 acres of new in-bounds terrain, lift for 2013/14. Here's the release:
Rossland, British Columbia (September 26, 2012) – Located on BC’s famous “Powder Highway,” RED Mountain Resort just hit overdrive: On August 1, 2012, RED began developing our most significant expansion to date: Grey Mountain. This two-year expansion adds almost 1,000 acres — and a whole new mountain – to our already epic 1,685 acres.
“The scale of this expansion is a true game-changer for RED Mountain Resort and for the community of Rossland,” said Howard Katkov, President and CEO of Red Mountain Resort. “The management team has spent the last eight years carefully reinforcing the company’s infrastructure, investing 50 million dollars in the facilities and completing world class slope-side accommodations. Now we’re truly ready for prime-time. We’ve consciously kept a low profile while we diligently readied ourselves for this massive expansion.”
RED has always been revered for: light, dry snow; world-class tree skiing; incredible steeps; 2,919 feet of vertical; our incredible, laid back vibe and our friendly locals. The Grey Mountain expansion will open up a vast store of intermediate runs, making most “family friendly” resorts pale by comparison. And, like the other mountains, Grey will offer what we call “3-D skiing”:
“Grey, like Granite (RED’s other peak), is volcano-shaped, which allows for 360-degree skiing around the peak from a single lift, a topographical feature few resorts in the world are lucky to have,” explains Katkov.
Chris Cushing, Principal at Snow Engineering (SE) Group, one of the ski resort industry’s premier design and engineering firms, said: “RED Mountain’s expansion to Grey Mountain is the biggest, most exciting project in North America this year, and SE Group is proud to have worked with RED to make it happen. Not only does the expansion increase RED’s skiable terrain by about 1,000 acres, it also adds wide terrain variety -– from groomed cruising runs to tree glades and alpine chutes -– that will create a whole new world for RED skiers. This project is one of the most dramatic transformations of an existing major ski area that we’ve seen and it is one of the largest — if not THE largest — single-season ski area expansion projects in North America in several decades.”
The 997-acre expansion on Grey alone is about the same size as the revered Mt. Baker Ski Area in Washington. To put this in perspective, total acreage with our new terrain on Grey makes RED larger than Jackson Hole, Wyoming. With the new zone, RED is elevated to the top three-percent (3%) of all resorts in North America for skiable acres (2,682!), while keeping its independent soul and escaping the stuffy (and expensive) trappings of many of the Mega Resorts.
For 2012-13, RED will be shuttling skiers, in groups of nine, to the top of Grey using a new Alpina Sherpa — an oversized snowmobile-bus that has to be seen to be believed. RED has purchased a Poma Quad Chair for installation next summer. At the completion of run development, Grey Mountain will have 22 perfect ski runs, leaving plenty of trees and terrain variations for riders to express themselves on.
“We see the Grey expansion as an expression of our commitment to the next generation of skiers and snowboarders, as well as to our current fans,” explains Fran Richards, Vice President, Marketing. “We share their values when it comes to mountain recreation and feel a deep responsibility to protect the wonderful ski experience at RED. We truly see RED as an endangered species, one of the last resorts that celebrates the true skiing experience: offering wide open terrain and all the amenities one expects, without the rampant commercialism that has significantly changed the face of the ski experience throughout North America. Many recreational skiers and snowboarders have never experienced a pure world like RED and we’d like to show them that the other side is, in fact, better.”
RED Mountain is located in Rossland, BC, a scenic mining town dating back to 1898. It is the oldest ski area in Western Canada and the last great, undiscovered resort in North America. Last Year, The NY Times rated RED as one of the Top Three ski areas in North America for Advanced skiers.

The Gathering at Red Resort and Salomon's Guardian 16 Binding

The Gathering No. 4
Rossland BC March 23-24, 2012

Red Mountain Resort hosted The Gathering over Friday and Saturday last week. With not much idea on what it was all about, we decided it was the perfect opportunity to head over to Rossland, sneak in bit of Red Mountain's slackcountry and see for ourselves what all this gathering was about.

We discovered that the Gathering is really about bringing together and showcasing stories, talent and personalities from the ski industry. The Miners Hall in Rossland was an ideal venue for an eclectic range photographic and film presentations with some seriously unique stories. Ski legends and personalities such as John Eaves and John Faulkner presented alongside photographic stars including Mark Shapiro and Blake Jorgensen. John Eaves' film shorts from his days as a ski stuntman were seriously entertaining and crazy (think skiing a bobsled run or down 50 degree blue ice on toothpicks).

Salomon will be sponsoring the Gathering at Red Mountain for the next three years so if you missed this years there is always next year and Red has plenty of great on-resort accommodation if you're planning a visit.

With Salomon the major sponsor we had the opportunity to check out the latest Salomon ski line up and take a good look at the new Guardian 16 AT binding.

Salomon Rocker2 115 + Guardian 16 AT Binding
The second day of the Gathering at Red Resort we went searching for some left over powder from the weeks storm cycles. We were armed with the Salomon Rocker2 115 mounted with the Guardian AT Bindings. These are Salomon's (new for Fall 2012) fat rockered skis and their entry into the alpine touring Binding market.

We set our sights on Mt. Roberts but first had to make a quick detour into the Red Resort rental shop for some downhill boots as the Salomon Guardian AT Bindings would not safely accommodate my Dalbello Virus Tour ID AT boots. The problem it seems is that the boot has particular design features that optimize it for a tech binding but don't fit so well with a more freeride oriented touring binding. The boots sole rises slightly at the toe and the toe itself is pointier with a shorter binding fixture which doesn't sync with the Guardian binding toe wings. On top of this the Dalbello has a rubber sole to enhance walking which can be sticky with the binding release plate underneath the toe of the boot. This basically means you may not release as well as if you were in a plastic soled boot.

We did give a try with the Black Diamond Swift AT boots which fit the Guardian fine but still have the full rubber sole. Our friendly Salomon ski-tech Ryan was very knowledgable and let me know that most tech compatible AT boots are not ideal with freeride oriented touring bindings such as the Salomon Guardian or Marker AT bindings. The micro misfit of the boots can compromise the bindings ability to perform, and more importantly, compromise ski release. Short term solution was a pair of rental Tecnica boots, long term solution according to Ryan was a pair of Salomon's Quest AT boots.

With the Guardian AT Binding riddle solved we headed out to give them a test on a few side-country laps. The main advantage of the Guardian is that their lower, wider design keeps you close to the ski and effectively enables you to drive something as fat as the Salomon Rocker2 which was 115mm underfoot. The Guardian was super solid on the groomers and I wish the chop was not so frozen and the powder more plentiful so we could have given them a real work out. To better understand how the Guardian operates have a gander below of some shots of risers at work and the switch over from skiing to touring.
The switch over to tour mode from ski mode:

The Guts of the Guardian that make things happen:

Engaging the risers:

Risers in action:

Given that I was on rental boots I don't think it would be fair to assess the Salomon Rocker2 as the boots just didn't do the skis justice and we only had a few laps in marginal snow conditions. What I did experience I liked but we will have to leave the full review of the Salomon Rocker2 and Guardian 16 AT Bindings for when we are able to get our hands on these new products, along with of course the Quest AT compatible boots. Stay tuned.

With a 10cm snowfall Sunday night my buddies and I ventured on a mellow backcountry/XC tour into one of the many cabins in the Rossland Range. We stuck mostly to forestry roads as the snow was barely skiable...20cms at best. We're a ways off touring yet, but sliding on snow, roasting grilled cheeze over the stove and enjoying a few beveriges is enough to stoke the fire within. With more snow in the forecast, looks like it'll soon be game on for 2011/12!

Rossland Range/Red Mountain Resort backcountry conditions update with Video

Hiked up Record Peak today for giggles and to see what has happened since the epic dump last Wednesday followed by a painful warming/rain episode. What I found wasn’t very funny. We’ve got it all: rain crust, wind crust, slabby snow and multiple faceted layers. Before I tell you what I learned though, I need to preface these comments by saying I am not a professional guide or snow scientist, but rather an experienced backcountry skier with courses under my belt. This is how I see it…

I dug two pits, one on a due south aspect at about 35 degrees inclination and one on the northeast face at about 35-40 degrees near an area that slides often and big. The results:
South Record Peak - Did a shovel compression and sheer test…the warm weather shrunk the snowpack to 100-110cms with a distinct rain crust on top. Air temp was approximately -4c at 3 p.m. The test results showed moderate release at 35cms, and moderate to hard releases at 70 cms (below the distinct rain crust from December). I would have felt ok about skiing the trees on this aspect and would avoid the open slopes and convexities, but the crust (5-10cm penetration and grabby) was so brutal I skied down to the ridge with my skins on after digging a pit on the north side. All aspects had poor skiing.

Northeast Record Peak - Tap and shovel test again, 15 minutes later. 185cm depth and multiple layers, some hard to see but apparent in tests. Again, rain crust on top with a distinct layer 35cm and another at 50cms released moderate. The lower layers were hard to go, but most troubling was the hard release below the distinctive ice crust at about 100cm depth. This was a planar release and while hard to get to go, an avalanche of the top 35-45cms could trigger this deep layer and it would go big.

I traversed down Whitewolf Ridge and skied icy groomers down Red to my car, resigned to not tour again until more snow arrives and stability improves.

Here’s a short vid of what I saw:

Here's a short edit of a rip at Red Resort from Granite to Mt. Roberts and down DL's trees, Dec. 19, 2010. There was ~20 to 25cm of blower pow over a rain crust which made for surprisingly fun skiing. With lots of snow in the forecast, it's going to be a very happy holidays indeed! Enjoy…

Red Resort and slackcountry update, Dec. 18

The conditions at/around Red this week went from gnarly rain crust to pretty fine powder, but variable conditions remain depending on the aspect. There’s a bomber base at the resort now. Judging from the lineups, yesterday’s Free Ski Day was a success. However the hill’s pretty skied out and in need of some snow. Groomer lovers rejoice. The rest...take a hike!

Speaking of hiking, back/slack country travel is fairly easy with the rain crust 15cms down. The wet heavy snow/rain episode earlier in the week consolidated the base and coverage isn’t much of an issue. I observed no avalanche activity, natural or skier-triggered. With future snow falls, the rain crust will be an important (scary?) one to watch. I did two laps on Mt. Roberts and enjoyed some sweet turns, but when I’d check speed/turn hard I’d sink below the grabby crust. Overall, certainly worthwhile and the sunshine is a bonus. I shot some helmet cam but it was pointed too low...so I'll save you from having to watch my boots in HD. Hope to have a vid up in the next couple days.

Happy turns, Zorba

Hiked up Red Mtn proper last night…fun short tour via headlamp. The 20cm of snow yesterday did wonders to a pretty heinous snowpack, but it's still variable. Pretty easy walking where the windslab formed last week, super soft elsewhere. Snowpack averaged 60cm to 80cm and varied greatly top to bottom (down to 30cm in spots), with the most snow seemingly at mid-mountain. Turns were slow but fun and I didn't hit anything. The soft snow on the wind crust kept me afloat but as soon as I slowed down or stopped I'd sink into the bottomless base beneath. I'd stay away from steeper slopes (did the back run) until we get another good dump. Let's hope we get some for the Dec. 11 opening or it could be delayed or marginal at best, especially for the upper mountain.
